The 2008 Napa Valley Cabernet derives substantial depth and breadth of character from the diverse terroir represented by these four hallmark vineyards. Concentrated aromas of black currant, mocha and tobacco leaves reveal themselves as this deep crimson wine opens in the glass. A dense, viscous palate coats the mouth with boysenberry, red currant, clove and cassis. Velvety tannins weave together with layers of vanillin, baker’s cocoa, anise and cedar to create a lengthy, expressive finish.

These are all words used to describe Paul Hobbs. One of the first California winemakers to focus on single-vineyard wines, Paul Hobbs took the challenge one step further by dedicating himself to crafting unfiltered and unfined wines, fermented with native yeasts. His vision has resulted in exciting, structured wines that are rooted in classic old world techniques and, at the same time, are distinctly Californian in their expression. And, he continues to be a leader of Argentina’s ongoing winemaking revolution. Not bad for a farm boy from upstate New York.

WINE SPECTATOR REVIEW: Firm, tight and compact, with a trim mix of dried currant, berry and red and black licorice. This unfolds gracefully, showing a mineral and sage edge, before firming on the finish. Drink now through 2019.

ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: This is a winner! Slightly better is the 4,000 case 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa cuvee. It offers up complex aromas of tobacco leaf, graphite, damp earth, blackberries and black currants, full-bodied power and more density, depth and structure than the Cross Barn. Already drinkable, it should age effortlessly for two decades.
