2009 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

Quick Overview

Scarlet color and brackish edges. Nose is sweet fruit and smoked meats. This wine already has some bouquet of truffle mushrooms, vanilla style oak. The palate is creamy richness with nuances of leather and a cocoa-style fine grain tannin. The flavors and structure of this vintage are consistent with the Caymus style of spice, toast, cassis, and fully rich, yet supple.

2009 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1972 by Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner on the family's Rutherford property. The Wagners produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1972 vintage. Their first Special Selection - from outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon lots given extended barrel aging - was made from the 1975 vintage. Caymus has made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon every year since its founding and production has remained at the same level since the 1989 vintage.
The Wagners took the name Caymus from the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, given to George Yount in 1836, which included what eventually became the town of Rutherford and much of the surrounding area. (Caymus was also the name of a subgroup of Mishewal-Wappo Indians whose village was north of what is now the town of Yountville).

WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 91

WINE SPECTATOR REVIEW: Supple and creamy-textured, with mocha, ripe plum and cherry flavors that show touches of tobacco, espresso and underbrush. Full-bodied, gaining tannic traction on the finish, elegant and readily approachable. Drink now through 2018.

Year after year I just don't know how these guys do it, and make one of the most brilliant wines ever. Consistent every year, and i'm sure everyone can agree with me on that. Big fan of previous vintages especially the 2007 & 08, but the 2009 is right there with them, just needs a little time, and it is beginning to come around. Decant if your planning to enjoy it now.
