2009 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas Paso Robles Rhône Red Blend 750ml

Quick Overview

Wine Spectator Top 100: 2011 #37! The Tablas Creek Vineyard Côtes de Tablas is a blend of four estate-grown Rhône varietals: 43 % Grenache, 24% Syrah, 18% Counoise, and 15% Mourvèdre. Like most wines of the Southern Rhône, it is a blend of varietals, featuring the fruit and spice of Grenache balanced by the spice and mineral of Syrah, the appealing briary wildness of Counoise, and the structure Mourvedre. The 2009 Côtes de Tablas shows a rich, minty nose with dark chocolate, cherry, leather, licorice and crushed rock. The mouth explodes with dark cherry, with nice chalky Grenache tannins giving firmness. The very long finish lingers with flavors of licorice, spice and cherry liqueur. The wineries most concentrated Côtes de Tablas ever; it should drink well young but also cellar happily for a decade.

2009 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas Paso Robles Rhône Red Blend 750ml

In 1989, Robert Haas, Jean-Pierre Perrin and François Perrin established Tablas Creek Vineyard west of Paso Robles, on California's Central Coast. Named after the small creek running through the property, the 120-acre site twelve miles from the Pacific Ocean shares many of the same characteristics as the Perrins' Rhone estate. The shallow, rocky limestone soils are of the same geologic origin as those at Beaucastel, and the Mediterranean climate of hot summer days and cold nights is ideal for Rhone-style grapes. The influence of the nearby Pacific cools the nights and lengthens the growing season, while the site's 1500-foot elevation keeps the vineyard above the coastal fog.

To ensure that the vines at the California estate were of the highest quality, the partners imported several clones each of Mourvedre, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Counoise, Roussanne, Viognier, Marsanne, and Grenache Blanc from Beaucastel.

WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 93

WINE SPECTATOR REVIEW: Charmingly fruity, supple and fun to drink, exhibiting ripe plum, black cherry and wild berry fruit that’s smooth and layered, with a long, fruity finish. Grenache, Syrah, Counoise and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2017.
