Wine Spectator Top 100: 2011 #59! The bouquet consists of mature red berries, with hints of smoke, vanilla, and spice. Well-structured in the mouth, this Crianza is expressive and meaty and possesses a good balance of red fruit and toasted flavors. The tannins are mature and lead to an elegant, long finish. While this wine can be enjoyed now, it will also keep for 5-10 years.

The 2008 Caiarossa Pergolaia (85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon) there is no use of new oak. The wines can be aged in different kind of casks: barrels of second to fourth wine or bigger "botte". The aging time in wood is about 12 to 16 months, and then the wine is kept in concrete tanks until his bottling, about two years after the harvest.

Direct from the winery, some older releases of "library" wines that are drinking beautifully. Heady pure fruit aromas of dark red fruit, black plum, black cherry and mocha leap from the glass of this classic Cabernet Sauvignon and lead into layers of warm baking spices and anise. The palate is full of rich fruit supported by supple tannins that are long and fine. An opulent Cabernet Sauvignon with powerful structure and intensity that underscores why this varietal is one of the major pursuits at Etude.

The Napa Cabernet from the 2010 vintage shows lots of classic character reflecting the small collection of vineyards in Calistoga, Rutherford and Oak Knoll from which it is crafted. Complex aromas of pencil lead, tar, mineral and tobacco leaf are woven around plum fruit and currants with sweet mocha spices. Fruitful and focused on entry the palate picks up minerality and muscle with classic dusty tannins and semi-sweet chocolate.

Presumably in connection with wider sourcing of fruit for Gunderloch’s nowadays high-volume Kabinett cuvee, that wine has been marginally disappointing in recent years, but I’m happy to report that the 2010 Riesling Kabinett Jean-Baptiste is highly-satisfying, its sweetness well-judged and its satin-textured palate a lemon and orange matrix suffused with crushed stone. There could be more focus and penetration to the finish, but this should prove a satisfactory companion for several years. -David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate

The finished wine has full black cherry and blackberry fruit aromas with a beautiful balance and a big, sumptuous, and juicy mouth feel. It also presents complex spicy aromas, with a nice creamy texture derived from the 10 months time it receives in French oak barrels. This wine has become the wineries popular, but serious cru Beaujolais-styled Zinfandel that has found its way on to many great restaurant lists across North America where it is often listed "by the glass". It is consistently rated one of the top Zinfandels in its class and one of the best value Zins available. Although drinkable now, it gains complexity with bottle age. This wine's release each Fall has become highly anticipated by many.

The cooler 2010 growing season has produced a classic expression of Pinot Noir with beautiful layers of cherry, raspberry, cedar, clove and cinnamon, as well as more floral notes of rose and carnation. Though the tannins are creamy, rich and fine-grained, there is a bright acidity that penetrates the tannins and keeps the wine light and lively. While the wine's energy and hightone red-fruit notes are a constant from start to finish, deeper notes of chocolate, moist earth and forest floor offer balance and add complexity. A great wine that's reminiscent of the exceptional 2007 vintage.

An A+ vineyard from a tiny parcel of land on Sonoma Mountain named Farina. The farmer Joe Votek is the same farmer for our Bald Mountain Syrah vineyard. It was picked the first week of October and fermented in barrel for 3 months. It was aged in the same barrels for 18 months before bottling in April 2010. 40% new oak from Burgundy was used on this stunning wine.
