1999 d'Arenberg Coppermine Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale South Australia

SKU #500270
The wine is deep and dark, almost to the point of being black. The nose is intense with varietal cassis and mint balanced with an earthy leafiness, slight eucalypt and a hint of dark chocolate. It’s wonderfully enticing with enough complexity to draw you back to uncover the pretty floral violet tones. The palate is linear and pointed with a lovely tannin structure that drives the wine to a long finish with a slight explosion of chalky mineral tannins that are utterly moorish. Although still youthful and tight, the palate delivers on the promise of the nose with lovely savory characters of dried herb and tobacco leaf and a touch of pot pourri adding to the rich fruit. The precise tannin structure and complex savory characters of this wine are an absolute delight.

ROBERT PARKER RATING: 95
ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: One of South Australia's most brilliant Cabernets is d'Arenberg's 1999 The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months, it boasts an opaque purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of creme de cassis, lead pencil, new saddle leather, and spice box aromas. There is great depth, fabulous purity, full body, and superbly integrated tannin as well as acidity. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.
Upon release, The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon has a vibrant young deep red - purple color. The nose shows intense blackcurrant fruit, cedary cinnamon spice barrel ferment & oak derived aromas, violet and mint scents as well as liquorice & chocolate smells. Primary mulberry aromas are also evident on the palate. Combined with some blueberry, cassis and sweet rhubarb flavors dominating the typically rich & intense sweet, cedary middle palate flavors. These are followed by a typically firm but fine-grained tannin extended texture overlaying soft plum which deceptively disguises the rich powerful cassis and blackcurrant flavors. The emphasis is on powerful full-bodied varietal fruit flavor integrated with barrel fermented and oak matured characters falling into the cedary, smokey and cashew spectrum.
