The 2007 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon captures the true essence of Rutherford. “It is like walking through a blackberry bramble in the heat of summer,” explains Winemaker Jeffrey Stambor. “There is an explosion of blackberry fruit, earthiness as you kick up some dust and a hint of dried leaf character .” With opulent dark berry, black cherry, cocoa, anise, forest loam and mineral notes, the wine has well-integrated oak spices that heighten alongside fruity aromas for a long, lingering finish.

ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: One of the most dramatic revelations in my California North Coast tastings was the resurrection/renaissance of Beaulieu Vineyard, one of the historic names in California winedom. This was the source of some extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons in the fifties, sixties, and early seventies, but the winery fell on hard times and was sold (it is now owned by the gigantic Diageo company). However, they have come back with a vengeance over the last few vintages. Michel Rolland, the brilliant wine consultant, was brought in to help resurrect the Private Reserve program, and it appears his magic has spilled over onto the other wines as well.
With Beaulieu Vineyards long history in Rutherford, they have access to some of the finest fruit in this region. In addition to the 380 acres they own, they have established relationships with some of the most renowned growers in the area. Here, in gravelly, alluvial soils, vines dig deep seeking water and nutrients, bringing up minerals that influence wine flavors. “It takes Rutherford Dust to make great Cabernet,” said legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff. The Rutherford American Viticultural Area, just 3.3 miles long and 2 miles wide, is a tiny jewel in the heart of Napa Valley, so well suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon that this single varietal comprises 70 percent of the region’s vineyard acreage.
