ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: The 2007 Mestizaje is a blend of 70% Bobal, with the balance Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was barrel-fermented and raised in oak for 6 months prior to bottling without fining or filtration. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an alluring perfume of cedar, tobacco, black raspberry, black cherry, and violets. This is followed by a smooth-textured, layered, savory wine with lots of spice, chocolate-covered cherry and black fruit flavors.
70% Bobal, 10% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Garnacha Tintorera. Bodegas Mustiguillo is a charming small winery built on the site of a former stable and has become the star of the Utiel-Requena. Mustiguillo's owner, Toni Sarrión is the devoted cultivator of high-elevation Bobal vines in the heart of this beautiful region. Mustiguillo is unique in its quest to "rescue" the indigenous Bobal variety, a grape known primarily for rose production, but when handled carefully, can produce reds of remarkable quality – such as those from Bodegas Mustiguillo.
