2012 Felsina Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva 750ml

Quick Overview

Ruby red appearance with rich, intense tones. Spicy nose with floral notes and hints of wild berry (red and black), accompanied by mineral impressions and light toasted notes. Spice re-appears on the palate, which displays firm but supple tannins, and the finale is vigorous and taut. Overall, the wine is compelling for its flavor-rich mid-palate and supporting acidity.

2012 Felsina Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva 750ml

The Rancia vineyard takes its name from the historic Rancia estate, once a Benedictine monastery. Located in Castelnuovo Berardenga at elevations ranging between 400 and 420 metres with a fine southwest-facing exposure, the vineyard covers 6.25 hectares. The more recent plantings utilized genetic material from massal selections gathered from the old Rancia vineyard. The soil is composed of the limestone-derived alberese classic to the Castelnuovo Berardenga area and of galestro marl in some areas. First vintage was 1983.

ANTONIO GALLONI RATING: 94

ANTONIO GALLONI REVIEW: A ripe, powerful wine, the 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia offers a level of finesse that balances some of the more overt intensity of the year. Dark cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice add shades of nuance as this beautifully delineated Rancia opens up in the glass. Because of its mid-weight structure, I expect the 2012 will give up its charms relatively early by Rancia standards, which means around age 15-20. The 2012 is not an obvious or explosive Rancia, rather is a wine built on compelling overall harmony.

ROBERT PARKER RATING: 93

ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: The single-vineyard 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a luminous and radiant Sangiovese-based wine. The vineyard is characterized by well-draining gravel soils with alberese and tufo limestone. Rancia delivers a beautiful sense of roundness and softness with dark berry, blackberry, leather, spice and pressed rose petal. This is an articulate and sophisticated wine. You can count on this Chianti Classico for excellent quality in what was a patchy vintage in other parts of the appellation.

WINE ENTHUSIAST RATING: 94

WINE ENTHUSIAST REVIEW: Full-bodied and loaded with finesse, this opens with aromas of ripe dark-skinned fruit, exotic spice, toast and a whiff of new oak. The firm palate delivers ripe black cherry, crushed plum, clove and ground pepper alongside fine-grained tannins. Drink 2017–2024.
