2013 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 750ml

Quick Overview

Light straw hue. Lively aromas of Meyer lemon zest and lime blossom are underscored with hints of crisp Comice pear and crushed, coastal stones. The palate confirms the nose and is heightened by a driving minerality and vibrant acidity that carries through on the lingering finish.

2013 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 750ml

As nursery owners in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walt and Joan Flowers had long dreamed of combining their love of wine with their passion for agriculture. They knew they wanted to produce their favorite varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; what they didn’t know was that their path would eventually lead them across country to Northern California’s rugged Sonoma Coast. After responding to a small classified ad in a national wine publication, that’s exactly where they landed.
Perched on top of soaring coastal ridges that border the Pacific Ocean, Flowers’ estate vineyards were some of the first planted on the “extreme” Sonoma Coast (1991). Flowers’ vineyards rise up just two miles from the rugged Pacific Ocean cliffs at elevations of 1,150 to 1,875 feet.

ANTONIO GALLONI RATING: 92

ANTONIO GALLONI REVIEW: The 2013 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous entry-level offering. Lemon peel, white pepper, white flowers and pears meld together in an effortless, precise Chardonnay long on personality and real class. The flavors are bright, focused and nuanced throughout. The Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is made mostly from purchased fruit, but it is nevertheless a terrific entry-level wine that captures the house style nicely. Flowers is another estate that excels with Chardonnay in 2013. All three wines in this lineup are fabulous. In particular the two selections from Camp Meeting Ridge - a site originally developed by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer and planted with old selections of Wente from Larry Hyde's vineyard - show just how magical this site is for top-notch Chardonnay. The 2012 Pinots are pretty, but also forward and at times even a bit fragile, both of which suggest they are best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

WINE ENTHUSIAST RATING: 91

WINE ENTHUSIAST REVIEW: Young and light, with a nutty coating around flavorful layers of pear and yellow apple, this wine has a crispness that remains balanced throughout. A good food wine, with enough acidity to stay refreshing, this is a fine, fairly larger-production white built to impress.

WINE & SPIRITS RATING: 93

WINE & SPIRITS REVIEW: A captivating balancing act, this blend of fruit from the Camp Meeting Ridge estate and other coastal sites feels at once concentrated and weightless. The first impression is one of healthy, plump fruit-ripe apricot, perhaps a hint of caramelized sugar-but it hews to a clean line, the flavors growing more earthy as taut acidity pulls toward crisp, green-tinged suggestions of seashells and borage flowers. More than the flavors themselves, it’s the overall impression of satiny grace that gives this coastal white its beauty.
