2014 Keenan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

Quick Overview

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed primarily of grapes grown on Keenan’s Spring Mountain District Estate; the remainder of the fruit was harvested from the Napa Carneros region and Pope Valley, a grape growing region located in the eastern portion of Napa. Keenan’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were harvested beginning on September 3rd, with the final lot being picked on September 23rd. After harvest, the fruit clusters were de-stemmed, then fermented for ten to fourteen days. The wine was barrel aged in thirty-three percent new French and American oak for twenty months. The blend was assembled just before bottling. The Estate grown Cabernet imparts amazing concentration and remarkable structure, while the portion of Cabernet harvested from Pope Valley adds complex aromas and a balanced mid-palate.

2014 Keenan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim.

ANTONIO GALLONI REVIEW: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon offers notable depth and intensity in the mid-weight, classically inspired style that runs through all these wines. The coarse, somewhat rustic, tannins need quite a bit of air to soften, but once they do, pretty red stone fruit, spice and floral notes start to develop. Even so, the 2014 remains a bit rough around the edges. It will be interesting to see what time brings.

ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: Their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is 100% Cabernet, has a dense ruby/purple color, attractive floral and blackcurrant fruit notes, medium body, and a lovely finish with no hard edges. This is the definition of elegance, restraint and finesse. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. This winery on Spring Mountain has been doing an impeccable job of winemaking for a number of years now, and they continue to show a Midas touch across all varieties they work with.
