2018 Sapaio Volpolo Bolgheri 750ml

DECANTER MAGAZINE REVIEW: Sapaio is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot. Its muscular reputation put it in danger in 2017, however it shows a better balance than usual considering the vintage conditions. Crimson in colour, it is restrained on the nose with youthful, almost estery fruit, elegant, vinous and balsamic. The tight yet ripe palate displays grainy tannins and integrated acidity. The toasty finish completes a very good picture indeed in 2017.
JAMES SUCKLING REVIEW: Aromas of blueberries and slate follow through to a medium body with nicely integrated tannins and a cool, fresh finish. Drinkable now, but better in 2021.
ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: Made with organically farmed grapes, the Podere Sapaio 2017 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is a softly pliant and charming wine. The Volpolo is Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot and Petit Verdot from a gem of an estate that works hard to deliver on the promise of the great Bolgheri appellation. From a warm and dry vintage, this wine is remarkably seamless in terms of its aromatic delivery, with blackberry and plum that cede slowly to smoke, tar and spice. There is some dryness or astringency that comes with the tannins, and this is something I noticed across the vintage. That said, Tuscan red wine enthusiasts get good value in this release of 83,000 bottles.
