2021 Daou Pessimist Paso Robles Red Blend
SKU #5062312
Winery Notes- The 2021 vintage delivers yet another stunning blend with trademark Pessimist flair. This wine is powerful and intensely aromatic out of the glass, presenting fragrances of blueberry, boysenberry and black plum. Secondary layers reveal elderberry, truffle, cocoa and cardamom spice accented by hints of eucalyptus, leather, cherry pipe tobacco and grilled meats. Broad and expansive on the palate, it bestows lush, generous flavors of black cherry, blueberry crème de cassis and damp forest floor. Hints of lavender, anise and black olive complement the rich, ripe fruit flavors. Massive in weight yet elegantly structured, this wine is a powerhouse that reveals itself gradually yet deliberately. It finishes smoothly with leisure and length, on notes of blackberry, espresso bean and pomegranate.
VINOUS RATING: 91
VINOUS REVIEW: Dark purple. Oak-spiced black and blue fruit, mocha and floral qualities on the nose. Broad and supple in texture, offering pliant blackberry, kirsch, vanilla and salty olive flavors that deepen steadily through the midpalate. Finishes long, smooth and spicy, with even tannins and resonating smokiness.
JEB DUNNUCK RATING: 92
JEB DUNNUCK REVIEW: Always a Petite Sirah-dominated wine, the Pessimist sports an inky purple color as well as a great, full-bodied style carrying wonderful blue fruits, spring flowers, spice, and vanilla aromas and flavors. It's textured, has ripe tannins, loads of fruit, and is about as sexy and gulpable as they come.
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 92
ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: Deep ruby-purple, the Pessimist is a blend of 62% Petite Sirah, 18% Syrah, 18% Zinfandel and 2% Lagrein, matured for 10 months in 60% new French oak. It's scented of black cherries with touches of purple flowers, graphite and grilled meats, and the medium-bodied palate is grainy and fresh with a long, perfumed finish. This offers fantastic quality for the price.
WINE ENTHUSIAST RATING: 93
WINE ENTHUSIAST REVIEW: Dense elderberry, charred meat and smoky wood aromas combine on the nose of this always enjoyable and attention-grabbing bottling. Black plum and roasted blackberry flavors meet with a stemmy herb touch on the ripe palate.
