ROSENBLUM PLANCHON VINEYARD  2005 Buy Wine $ 17.99
WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 91
This beautiful, extracted wine shows a bouquet of plums, cassis, and a touch of smoke with elements of cocoa and vanilla. The ripe, fat, black cherry flavors are punctuated with hints of smoked bacon and Asian spice. This wine should age well for 5-10 years, but will certainly reward earlier consumption.

Ripe and racy, with blackberry, mocha and walnut aromas and concentrated, jammy wild berry, licorice and peppered beef flavors. Drink now through 2011.

ROSENBLUM RICHARD SAURET  2005 Buy Wine $ 18.99
This is a rich and exotic fruit-packed Zinfandel. A bouquet of ripe black currant and blackberry with creamy ripe cherry essences is followed by flavors of currant and vanilla with hints of briary spice and cracked black pepper. We expect it to age gracefully for 5-7 years, but the opportunity to enjoy it in its youth shouldn’t be missed.

This rich, full wine exhibits the signature spicy earth tones that make Paso Robles Zinfandel so excellent. BUY THEM WHILE THEY LAST!

JANUIK  2005 Buy Wine $ 27.99
WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 93
This supple, complex Cabernet is overflowing with ripe currant, blackberry, chocolate and warm vanilla notes in the nose. On the palate, the wine lingers with a long, supple finish.

Poised and refined, almost elegant, this has a gorgeous core of currant, blackberry and dark plum flavors that ride on a sleek, seamless frame. The finish picks up hints of coffee and sweet spices as this lingers enticingly against a backbone of judicious acidity. A Cabernet with power and finesse. Best from 2010 through 2018.

COTE BONNEVILLE CARRIAGE HOUSE DUBRUL VINEYARD  2004 Buy Wine $ 47.99
WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 94
The 2004 Côte Bonneville Carriage House represents the alluvial Cabernet Sauvignon block with attractive bright blueberry, cherry, blackberry, and dark chocolate flavors, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg lingering on the finish. The fine tannins are well balanced with French oak notes. Aromas of raspberry and bright cherry rise effusively, while the brilliant garnet color radiates from the wine. 2004 has been hailed by Kevin Zraly as an exceptional Washington vintage. The 2004 Carriage House fulfills that expectation.

This is dense, juicy and savory with meaty edge to the plump cherry and boysenberry flavors glowing at the core, persisting elegantly on the long, focused finish. Cellaring should add even more depth. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2009 through 2016.

DOMINUS  2005 Buy Wine $ 119.99
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 96
Dominus 2005 is dark red, almost deep crimson in color. The nose is dense and compact, filled with dark berries, blond tobacco, black cherries and cacao. The entry is both powerful and supple, spherical in quality. Perfectly ripe, the enveloped tannins are firm, round and elegant. Black fruit and licorice linger throughout the evolution in mouth, well-balanced and harmonious. A superb vintage.

The 2005 Dominus (a 7,000-case cuvee of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) has come of age, and is one of the strongest efforts they’ve made. It is possibly the best Dominus since the 2001, and perhaps even the 1997 or 1991. A beautiful, sweet nose of roasted coffee interwoven with kirsch, black currant, cedar, and spice box emerges from this deep ruby/purple-colored wine. The wine has fabulous intensity, a layered, opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, well-integrated acidity, and a stunningly long finish. The layering of this wine as it builds incrementally on the palate is something to behold. An outstanding, sexy, ageworthy Dominus, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and last for at least 25 or 30 years.

CONCHA Y TORO DON MELCHOR  2005 (6 BTL LIMIT!) Buy Wine $ 59.99
WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 96
This is still very tight, but the tannins that lead the way now are sleek and refined, and should easily meld into the huge core of roasted chestnut, black currant paste, warm fig and tar. Has a long, coffee- and loam-tinged finish. Best from 2009 through 2019.J.M.

ROY ESTATE  2005 Buy Wine $ 94.99
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 95
This 17-acre vineyard on the eastern side of Napa is owned by Charles and Shirley Roy. Located in what is known as the Soda Canyon area, the vineyard was planted under the direction of Helen Turley, but today’s winemaker is Philippe Melka. They have two wines in their cuvee, a Bordeaux blend and, of course, their Cabernet Sauvignon. My favorite of the quartet of wines I tasted is the 2005 Proprietary Red, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot (1,500 cases produced). Of course, Soda Canyon is a southern Napa region and cool, much like its neighbor Stags Leap. This wine exhibits very Bordeaux-like notes of black currants, chocolate, underbrush, and some background oak. With beautiful sweet fruit, striking elegance, well-integrated acidity, and a dense ruby/purple color and medium to full body, this will be a long-lived wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

HESTAN  2004 Buy Wine $ 119.99
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 90 -92
WINE SPECTATOR RATING: 91
Made by the famed winemaker Mark Herold (MERUS).

This small operation, run by Stanley and Helen Cheng with the assistance of well-known wine consultant, Mark Herold, produces 300+ cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 19-20 months in new oak. Tasted just prior to bottling, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as elegant, stylish notes of espresso roast, black currants, and toasty oak in a medium-bodied, soft, attractive format. It should drink well for 10-12 years.
-ROBERT PARKER REVIEW

A ripe, rich, complex style, with vivid currant and blackberry fruit that strays into some funky, earthy territory. Yet this rallies, with a finish that shows off its pepper and wild berry fruit. Best from 2009 through 2014. 470 cases made. –JL

BLANKIET PARADISE HILLS VINEYARD  2004 Buy Wine $ 259.99
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 96
There are 1,300 cases of the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard. Boasting delicious fudge-like aromas intermixed with blackberry, coffee bean, and pain grille scents, this super-rich, full-bodied effort displays a Graves-like, volcanic, scorched earth/hot stone element in its flavors. With moderately high tannin, it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well over the following two decades.

PENFOLDS KOONUNGA HILL  2006 Buy Wine $ 9.99
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 91
Purple-colored, the wine offers meaty black currant, blackberry, and blueberry aromas. On the palate the wine exhibits remarkable focus and structure for its humble price. The fruit is grapy and primary as well as intensely flavored. It should evolve for several years and drink well through 2022 if not longer. It is a fantastic value.

PILLAR BOX RED  2006 Buy Wine $ 9.99
ROBERT PARKER RATING: 91
The 2006 Pillar Box Red is 50% Shiraz, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot aged in a mix of used French and American oak. Purple-colored, it offers an enticing, fruity nose including aromas of cassis, black cherry, black raspberry, and blueberry. Full-bodied, ripe, and layered with flavor, this wine totally over-delivers on my hedonist’s meter. Drink this awesome value over the next 2-3 years. Pillar Box has a powerful pedigree; fruit sourced from Henry’s Drive and winemaking consultation from the renowned Chris Ringland.
