2023 Cep (Peay Vineyards) Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Winery Notes- The ideal expression of Pinot Noir to us is a wine that has body without heaviness and is full of flavor but graceful and elegant. The 2023 Cep Pinot Noir captures this essence and is just gorgeous. The aroma features bright fruits of raspberry, pomegranate, and cranberry with floral elements blowing through and a slightly brambly, anise quality giving ballast in the face of the high tones. It is full-flavored yet not rich, a quality I find very attractive and unique, especially at this price point. The acidity is mouth-watering though not aggressive. The tell-tale Peay Pinot Noir aromas of dried pine needle, jasmine tea, and earth linger in the aftertaste. This wine offers charm, complexity, and value. Cep is the second label of Peay Vineyards. The Pinot Noir is made from barrels that do not go into one of the Peay Pinot Noirs and, oftentimes, many of the barrels from a specific block found in a Peay wine are also in this cuvée. This style of Pinot Noir is simply not found in wines at this price point as it is made to be Peay and has impeccable balance, finesse, and site expressiveness. 2023 Road 31 Napa Valley Pinot Noir
Winery Notes- Four plots across two vineyards contributed to this wine. From the Green Island, at the southern mouth of the Napa River, where the water spills into the San Pablo/San Francisco Bay, comes the prettiness of clone 115 and power of clone 667. Stanly Ranch, in Carneros just northwest across the Napa River from Green Island, provides clone 114 structure and robustness of clone 777. What a wine this 2021 Road 31 Napa Valley Pinot Noir is. Imagine Harry Potter, Gal Gadot, Elvis (the early days, not the donut-eating-sequin-wings years), and a 1962 Ferrari GTO all wrapped together in velour. Pull the cork and you may find yourself suddenly reciting Shakespearean sonnets from memory, understanding string theory, and feeling an inexplicable desire — and capability — to dance the tango like a blind Al Pacino. We practice great vigilance over the fruit, aiming for modest yields in order to obtain our Estate Pinot Noir’s intense character, rich color, and exuberant aromatics.
