Winery Notes- The 2023 Castiel Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant powerhouse that perfectly showcases the sophistication and complexity of these two high-elevation vineyards. Upon approach, it opens with expressive dark aromatics of graphite, dark chocolate, crushed rocks, and black fruits that are seamlessly blended with pronounced classic mountain freshness, wild herb and savory complexities. On the palate, the mountain tannins are pronounced, yet they feel completely dissolved and polished giving the wine a deep, textural and incredibly concentrated mouthfeel without any hard edges or heaviness. While still a bit closed now, this wine has powerful sweet fruit, purfume and tannins. Dense black fruit reminescent of black cherries and blackberries on the palate with toasty oak. Full bodied. Good personality. Fresh and appealing. With an incredible presence in the glass with a certain austerity. Long, lingering finish. This is a benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet. Great potential. -
1997 Shafer Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
Just when we thought this one would never grow up, we find it moving past primary fruit with elegant characteristics of cedar, tea and tobacco. Even so, expect the ’97 to remain lively for a few years to come as it still offers big mouthfeel, dark color, with flavors of chocolate and black fruit. A long finish of mocha, vanilla and spice is tied up with the classic tannins of the Stags Leap District
